Tea was first introduced into the Garaina area of Morobe Province and then to the Waghi valley of Western Highlands Province, where it is now grown on commercial scale. Clonal materials and improved varieties were introduced by DAL in the past and tested at Kuk Research station, outside Mt. Hagen. The companies that are growing tea are also responsible for the maintenance of the genetic stock and the multiplication and distribution of seedling or clonal materials to the growers.
