Creating a new genebank (the fourth) in Papua New Guinea

The idea of using an isolated island as quarantine nursery was first suggested in 2012 by Dr Roland Bourdeix (at this time COGENT coordinator) in his 2012 report written after a visit at Madang Stewart Research Station, as follow:

..."Seednuts must be partially de-husked, numbered with the field number of the mother palm (using a tag attached to each seednut) and they must receive a strong treatment against insects and fungi. All seednuts must be transplanted by boat in a quarantine place, such as a small isolated island, in PNG or in Australia, and then grown in a local nursery. Then the germinated seednuts must be indexed for phytoplasma (Australian team and if possible Cirad team in France); the seedlings will be treated again and sent to the CCI Seed garden in Central province."

Symptoms of unknown etiologies in Milne Bay province

General view, will be good to complete it with previous genebanks (Rabaul, Kapogere)
ans Mishima island
